Grandparents can play a vital role in their grandchildren’s lives. When the child’s core family unit breaks down, the grandparent’s role can suddenly be cast into doubt. Grandparents can seek visitation and even custody of their grandchildren in certain limited cases.
Texas law generally favors parental control and decision making for their children, but grandparents may be able to seek full custody or visitation if a parent has been abusive, experienced drug problems, or relinquished their child to that grandparent.
